WTWT was set up following our Blackmore family visit to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in 2005. We had an opportunity to meet some of the local people in one of the villages, Irkeepusi in Nainokanoka ward. We were shown around by Ponja Tayai who we kept in touch with and soon learned of the enormous challenges they face with accessing clean water, health services, education and economic opportunities.
In addressing these challenges and over subsequent visits we became friends with Ponja and his family and got to know the wider community and leaders. To raise funds to help with these issues we registered as a UK charity. To be able to work with us in Tanzania and accept these funds Ponja and the community registered a partner community based organisation (CBO): Korongoro Community Trust (Registered Trustees of WTWT). Over subsequent years we have been back many times and now work with several community organisations in different wards. We are welcomed into their homes and the community to enable this collaboration.
We have great encouragement and funding from individuals and organisations in the UK, USA and other countries around the world which have enabled us to support the Maasai communities in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and beyond with their solutions to these challenges. We now have over 30 Tanzanian staff from the villages where we work.
