The Climate Crisis

For several decades the people in this area and across east Africa have lived with increasingly severe effects from climate change. The once regular bi-annual rains often fail completely, are erratic or the rainfall is reduced. Prolonged and frequent periods of drought have affected all dimensions of life of the Maasai pastoralists.

Back in 2005, when we first met the Maasai people of Ngorongoro, there was a severe drought, which took many of their cattle, sheep and goats. The people’s economy and daily needs depend upon their livestock. The milk and meat are a staple of their diet and livestock are traded for other foods and children’s education.

It was because their once reliable streams had dried up that we became involved supporting the communities with sustainable water solutions and gave our name to one of these projects ‘Wells for Tanzania’.

Our staff have created powerpoints with more details of these effects. Click the link to read more on The Maasai community’s livelihood in a changing climate
